Have you ever tried to lose weight or improve your fitness – only to get started but fall off track? Maybe you’ve hit the snooze button instead of getting up for your morning workout. Or, maybe you’ve had a momentary lapse in self-control as you find yourself elbow-deep in the cookie jar.

You’re not alone – we’ve all been there. Most of us more than once. This can lead to a sense of failure, leaving us feeling frustrated, guilty, and unmotivated.

So the big question is: how do you avoid falling off track? How can you make failure a thing of the past?

The reality is that is not that difficult. The key is to know your WHY.

What’s your WHY?

Your WHY is the deep emotional reason of why you really want to make a change. Maybe you’d like to lose a few kilos, reduce your stress levels, or simply eat a little healthier. These are your goals, or your objectives.

However, when you go a little deeper – when you look within yourself to the deep emotional aspect of why you really want to change – that is when you’ll know your WHY.

Get clear and know your WHY

Say your objective is to lose a few kilos – why do you really want that? What deep emotional reason sits behind your desire to lose weight? It could be that you want to feel better about yourself. It might improve the quality of your life, or give you more energy for your kids.

Know your WHY by asking yourself one key question: What do I want most in life that I will gain by achieving my goal?

Or in other words, what’s most important to you?

How to use your WHY

Next time that dreaded alarm clock goes off, or you are tempted to reach into the cookie jar, take a moment to remind yourself of your WHY. Sit with it for a moment. Rather than letting a moment of weakness become a moment of defeat, ask yourself “is this short-term temptation really what I want?”

Whatever your deeper WHY is: Hold onto it. Embrace it. Use it.
