Are we the only ones scratching our heads that it’s already February? After January felt like it would never end, suddenly we’re halfway through the second month of the year and the holidays feel like a distant memory…

Work is back into full swing. The kids’ freshly laundered uniforms are now worn in with dirt marks and food stains. And, for more than half of us – those *very* well-intentioned health goals for 2019 we made when we were all wide-eyed and bushy tailed on January 1st are feeling much less achievable.

Where are you at with your New Year’s Resolution?

Maybe for you January started off with a bang. You stayed on track, committed to yourself, and felt as though you were on your way to finally achieving better health. But, when the harsh reality of everyday life kicked back in you found yourself pushed to the bottom of the to-do list once again.

Perhaps – despite your determination and excitement at the beginning of the year – you struggled with finding motivation and failed to even make a start on your New Year’s Resolution. Or, maybe you’re still on track but feeling the wheels start to wobble a little bit.

Why? Because the very nature of New Year’s Resolutions make them unsustainable.

All it takes is one glance over the most common New Year’s Resolutions (diet or eat healthier, exercise more, lose weight) to see that most people set health goals that are way to broad and unspecific.

But don’t go throwing those shiny new sneakers to the back of the wardrobe just yet – we’ve come prepared with 3 easy ways to hit ‘REFRESH’ on 2019 so that you can set yourself up to smash your health goals for 2019.

Step 1: Ask yourself how ready you are

If we were to ask you right now: “Are you ready to make a change?” chances are you’d say yes. You’ve spent a small fortune on workout gear. The gym membership (that you secretly know you’ll never use) has been paid for. Your healthy shopping list loaded and ready to go. You’re determined to make 2019 the year for better health. Yeah, you might feel ready…

…But how ready are you really?

Readiness is more than simply being ready to execute against your goal. True readiness means being ready to make your health and wellbeing a not-negotiable; to push yourself to the top of your to-do list; to overcome the excuses and obstacles that will inevitably get in your way.

Assess your readiness to change now by asking yourself a few simple questions:

> Are you ready to make the sacrifices needed to stay on track long term?

> Are you ready to turn a ‘want’ into a ‘must have’?

> Are your ready to make being healthy a ‘not-negotiable’?

If your answer is ‘YES’ to all of these – well done, you’re ready. You’ve made a TRUE decision – a full commitment to yourself and to your health goals. You’ve been brutally honest with yourself and you’re now ready to achieve what you’ve set out to do.

If you answered ‘NO’ to some of those questions, then well done for being honest with yourself and acknowledging that you’re not quite there.  Now is the time to dig a little deeper to understand what’s holding you back, what challenges are getting in your way, and what you can do to move forward.

Step 2: Ask yourself – What’s My WHY?

If you’re struggling to stay on track with your health goals for 2019 (or even get started) – you’re missing one very important component that will shake things up completely. Your ‘Deeper WHY.’

Your ‘WHY’ is the deep, emotional reason of why you really want to make a change.

Most people make the mistake of thinking that having a goal (or a New Years Resolution) is enough to get you where you want to be. It’s not.

While we wish it were that simple, a goal doesn’t account for when life gets in the way – when the excuses start to creep in or when the obstacles pop up and derail our progress.

When you know your WHY, in those moments where you’re on the edge of temptation you will be reminded of what’s most important to you and why you started this journey in the first place.

Start to uncover your WHY now by asking yourself: What do I want most in life that I will gain by achieving my goal? What’s most important to me? What’s my WHY?

Here is where you need to really dig deep.

For example, if your goal is to lose some weight – why do you want that? Will losing weight make you feel more confident in your own skin? Do you want a little more energy to keep up with your kids as they get older? Will losing weight give you more self worth?

Finding your WHY is often a difficult and emotional process, but once you’re clear on it you’ll be able to use it to keep you focused and on track moving forward. Next time that little voice inside your head starts to lead you astray, STOP, count backwards from 5, and remind yourself of your WHY.

Step 3: Set a game plan to smash your health goals for 2019

As we mentioned earlier – one of the key issues with New Years Resolutions is that they’re too broad. While some might find having big goals an exciting challenge, most of us simply feel overwhelmed.

Instead of letting your brain get too far ahead of itself, it’s time to start breaking your goal(s) down into smaller, more achievable steps:

> Rather than than thinking about what you want to achieve this year, ask yourself where you want to be in 3 months time. Do you want to feel more energetic? Becoming fitter? Sleeping better?

> What do you need to do next week to achieve that 3 month goal?

> How and when will you make time for your goals? Start with small steps and be realistic about what you can fit into your life. Think about all of the commitments you have – the kids, work, relationships. Consider when you’re going to be able to do the actions you need to do to achieve your health goals?

The bottom line is this: if you haven’t achieved your New Years Resolution (or you started but fell off track) don’t feel disheartened. 92% of us are in the same boat. Use February as your month to refresh your mind, reconfigure your health goals for 2019, and restart the year  in the RIGHT way for long-term success.
